We are truly excited to inform you about Hope Mission’s largest expansion to date. You may be aware that over the past several years Hope Mission has experienced a significant increase in the number of men seeking emergency shelter and basic necessities. We have responded by installing bunk beds in all our Herb Jamieson Centre dorms. Nevertheless, our maximum capacity of 250 is still reached on a regular basis. Overflow is handled by bringing guests to the lower floor of the Women’s Centre to sleep on mats. Obviously these efforts can only be temporary as they do not address the need for adequate shelter space. Nor do they address the root causes through programs with supervised and independent housing. In response to these growing needs in Edmonton’s inner city, we will be building a new three story facility adjacent to our Women’s Centre.
Hope Mission’s new centre will be unique in that it will offer a stepping-stone or continuum of care approach to housing. Through four phases of residency, we will provide an intox/detox centre on the basement floor (70 occupants), emergency accommodation on the main floor (100 beds), transitional housing with treatment and support programs on the second floor (40 rooms), and long-term supportive living on the third floor (20 bachelor suites, 4 bedroom suites). The project will encourage individuals who have become accustomed to living in the Inner-City, or who have affiliations to the "street", an opportunity to access safe, supportive, affordable housing. We believe these housing models will offer an opportunity to our clients to gain the necessary skills, training and counseling to enable them to transition successfully into long-term supportive housing or market housing. There is much work to be done. We do ask for your prayers as we begin this major building project. January 21, 2004
