From 1948 – 2009 Bethany Homes for Children operated as a private foster care facility, providing a safe and loving home for over 870 children. When Bethany changed its focus from children to at-risk single parent families in 2009, BHC connected with and found support from Hope Mission. As the relationship grew over several months, Hope Mission was asked to provide the leadership for BHC. As of April 1, 2010 Hope Mission welcomed Bethany Homes as a part of their ministry.
Located 14km east of Wetaskiwin, Bethany Homes is situated on 140 acres of beautiful Alberta land that will be developed to offer ministry and service meeting needs of at risk women and children. Operating as an extension of Hope Mission’s Wellspring program, Bethany Homes will be a transitional place for Wellspring graduates to re-unite with their children, providing continued support focusing on parenting and establishing a healthy home. Housing will also be used as emergency living quarters for women and children seeking temporary sanctuary from situations of domestic violence.
While the facilities necessary to realize the long term vision are being developed, day programming will be offered from this location. Our summer gardening program will provide opportunity for men, women and youth in Hope Mission’s Wellspring, Breakout and SHIFT programs to learn the practical life-skills of planting, tending to and harvesting a garden.
Bethany Homes will also be a Hope Mission ministry offering the Horses of Hope program. Currently the women from the Wellspring program have been enjoying coming to Bethany one day each week to participate in Horses of Hope. Making this program available to local schools and groups, we hope to partner with our community in delivering a support service for youth.
